I suppose this increases the value of seed saving long lived seed types in home scale seed vaults (for having back up genetics that are non-contaminated incase they launch some kind of “self-amplifying” / self replicating GMO crops with interspecies contamination potential).
I save seeds using low tech desiccants and have gotten 95% viability after ten years in storage and I am also using my freeze dryer to create ultra-long term back up seed storage (most seed types survive the intense and unnatural cold/vacuum conditions of the machine and the seed embryo remains living and viable after freeze drying). That could theoretically mean the machine could enable seeds remaining viable (and genetically intact) for centuries if stored in ideal conditions (like in air tight jars or mylar bags in the dark, in a cellar).

What a sorry world we live in. We are divorcing ourselves from nature and this is dangerous. I live mostly in SE France and have done all my life, I was on the edge of a small village, surrounded by farmland. Now I am surrounded by new houses. Life was very tough, farm work is not for the feint hearted. Now the crops are tourists, people come and go and the old community is all but dead. Life is tough servicing tourists, rent is high, wages low, security? Forget it. Is life genuinely better now? I keep being told it is.
Some people want a picture perfect lifestyle, I don’t blame them, after all this is what we have been encouraged to live by. AC units everywhere instead of closing shutters and windows; Chemicals to kill all insects instead of mosquito nets; street lights to guide the people back to their dwelling instead of a torch (remember those?); lush english lawns to lie around on in 40 degree heat; enormous refrigerators full of food that more often than not ends up in landfill. I could go on.
This all requires vast amounts of electricity and water and now “they” are going to tinker around with fruit and vegetables. Shame on them.
